Warrant issued in abduction

July 30, 1997

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - The Berkeley County Sheriff's Department has issued an arrest warrant for a 31-year-old man accused of abducting and assaulting his ex-girlfriend early Sunday morning, police said.

John David Lynn, address unknown, was still at large Tuesday, police said. He is facing abduction and battery charges for allegedly forcing Betty J. Cunningham, 26, of Shenandoah Junction, Jefferson County, into his car shortly after 4 a.m. at the 7-Eleven store in Baker Heights, police said.

According to police, a man was following Cunningham's vehicle and she tried to escape him by pulling into the convenience store parking lot. He then forced her into his gray Lincoln sedan and drove her to Shenandoah Junction, where he released her about half an hour later, the report stated.

Cunningham returned to the 7-Eleven to get her car and report the incident to police. The report said her version of the incident was supported by the store's surveillance camera and a witness who initially called police.
