Fire assistant introduced to board

July 30, 1997

The Washington County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association introduced Robert P. Cumberland, its new county-funded administrative assistant, to the Washington County Commissioners Tuesday night.

Cumberland said he had been president of the Maryland State Fireman's Association and president of the Cumberland Valley Fireman's Association.

Cumberland also had been chief of the Westminster (Md.) Fire Engine and Hose Co. No. 1, and currently serves as vice president of that company.

Cumberland will work with training, maintaining inventory, will assist in preparing the association budget, and represent the association at county government meetings.

He will visit each department at least twice a year and represent the association at county government meetings and in the media.

Commissioners President Gregory I. Snook asked for an update on how the new position is working out after several months.

The position, which the commissioners are paying $29,000 to fill, replaces the fire and rescue coordinator job formerly held by Roger "Jerry" Reed.

"We want to make sure there is a smooth transition," Snook said.
