Martinsburg NAACP to host conference

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. - The Martinsburg-Berkeley Branch of the NAACP will host the 53rd Annual West Virginia State Conference of Branches of the NAACP on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 8-9, at Shepherd College.

This year's theme is "NAACP & Still We Rise." Registration will begin at 9 a.m. on Aug. 8.

Delegates from across the state will attend workshops and meetings at Shepherd's College Center. On Aug. 8, workshops will be held on health care and welfare reform, employment, criminal justice, and NAACP and the church.

The Rev. Patrick Walker, president of the Martinsburg-Berkeley Branch, invites the public to a soul food dinner at 6 p.m. and a 7 p.m. mass public meeting Aug. 8 at Dudley Baptist Church, Martinsburg. Cost of the dinner is $7.

On Aug. 9, workshops will be held on education, economic development and political action. The luncheon speaker will be David Dunlap, president of Shepherd College. Cost of the luncheon is $10.

The conference will end with a Freedom Fund banquet at Storer Ballroom, Shepherd College, at 6 p.m. The cost of the banquet is $25.

Registration is $15 and attendance is open to the public. James Tolbert, state NAACP president, invites all to attend the convention, the first hosted by the Martinsburg-Berkeley branch.
