About 125 ramps for the handicapped will be installed this year at alley intersections in Hagerstown.
City Council members approved several items, including a contract for the ramp work, by a 5-0 vote on Tuesday night.
The ramps to be installed this year are on the outskirts of downtown and branching five or six blocks into the outer city neighborhoods, said Assistant City Engineer Rodney Tissue.
The work should begin in early August and be done by the end of the year, Tissue said.
Handicap ramps were installed in the downtown area last year, he said. It will take two more years for handicap ramps to be installed throughout the rest of the city.
Kershner Construction in Clear Spring, the sole bidder on the project, will be paid $50,000, according to contract information.
