July 17, 1997

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - The Berkeley County Sheriff's Department has been awarded $150,000 from the federal government to add two deputies to its staff, according to U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller.

The sheriff's department currently has 26 deputies.

The money was part of $653,847 distributed to four communities across the state to increase the size of police departments, Rockefeller said in a news release.

The money was awarded through the U.S. Department of Justice's Community Oriented Policing Services, also referred to as COPS.
