Three-car collision sends three to hospital

July 16, 1997

Three vehicles collided Wednesday afternoon at the intersection of Virginia Avenue and Burhams Boulevard, sending three people to the hospital, witnesses said.

The Jaws of Life were used to pry Richard Ashley, 89, from the passenger side of one of the cars involved in the crash, police said.

Police said Jay Fairchild, 86, of Williamsport, was heading north on Virginia Avenue and attempted to turn left onto Burhams when the accident occurred.

Two southbound vehicles - a 1981 Chevrolet station wagon driven by Curtis Haston, 24, and a 1978 Chevrolet pick-up truck driven by Denny Hadley, 35 - collided, one collapsing into the passenger side of Fairchild's vehicle, where Ashley was sitting, police said.

Police said the accident was under investigation.

Washington County Hospital officials said Ashley was in serious condition and Fairchild was treated and released Wednesday night.

Audrey West, 18, of 402 N. Jonathan St., was a passenger in Haston's vehicle, Haston said. She was treated at the hospital emergency room and released a short while later, a hospital spokeswoman said.
