The American Red Cross has an offer for those who play bingo for blood.

Anyone who gives blood at the Halfway Volunteer Fire Company on Thursday, July 17, from 2 to 7 p.m. will get a $5 coupon for bingo, according to Chief Jeff Ringer.

An added bonus will be a free ticket to a Hagerstown Suns game.

"We are having critical shortages of O-negative blood," said Teresa Elwood, health services director at the Red Cross. That type is especially important because Washington County Hospital is a trauma center and O-negative blood is the universal donor.

"That's the type of blood that can be given to untyped trauma patients," Elwood said.

There also are shortages of O-positive and B-negative blood types, and all others have been in short supply since Memorial Day.

That's when the traditional summer slump in blood donations begins, Elwood said.

Ringer said his company, which also runs an ambulance, is sponsoring the bloodmobile on July 17 because he and the other volunteers know the importance of a stable blood supply.

"In addition to the $5 coupon for bingo, we will also have refreshments and tours of our new fire hall at 11114 Lincoln Ave. for anyone who comes to give blood," Ringer said.

Reservations are requested so waiting time will be minimized. Appointments can be made by calling 301-582-2223.

Elwood said the free Hagerstown Suns tickets will be available through July and August bloodmobiles.

Bloodmobiles through this month include:

  • Hagerstown City Hall - July 11, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Williamsport American Legion - July 21, from 1 to 7 p.m.
  • American Legion, Northern Avenue - July 22, from 1 to 6 p.m.
  • Brethren Mutual Insurance - July 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • Smithsburg Fire Hall - July 28, from 1 to 7 p.m.
  • Hancock American Legion - July 31, from 1 to 6 p.m.
