July 08, 1997

A Hagerstown City Police officer broke his hand Monday evening while arresting a man who was charged with drug and gambling offenses, authorities said.

James Julious Berger, 19, of 1021 B Lanvale St., was charged with illegal gambling, obstructing and hindering a police officer, possession of crack cocaine, possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine and possession of crack cocaine within 1,000 feet of a school, police said.

He was being held Monday night at police headquarters. He will appear before a bond commissioner this morning.

Officer Dwayne Freeman was patrolling the 400 block of Sumans Avenue at about 6:30 p.m. when he saw a dice game between some houses, police said. When the dice players saw him coming, they ran away, police said.

A man picked up some money and refused Freeman's order to stop. Freeman chased the man and stopped him, breaking his hand in the process, police said.
