MSO's Salute to Independence

SHARPSBURG - Maryland Symphony Orchestra will present the 12th annual Salute to Independence at Antietam National Battlefield on Md. 65 Saturday, July 5, at 7:30 p.m.

Maestro Barry Tuckwell, founding music director, will conduct a program of light classical and patriotic music. Maryland Army National Guard, B Battalion will provide the cannon fire during Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture" and Zambelli Internationale will provide the dazzling fireworks finale to "God Bless America."

Robert Aubrey Davis of WETA/WETH 89.1 FM will serve as master of ceremonies.

Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. The celebration is sponsored by Farmers & Merchants Bank and Trust, with additional funding provided by Antietam Cable Television Inc., The Herald-Mail Co., National Park Service and Washington County Gaming Commission.

Members of Escapade Theatre Co.'s "The Wizard of Oz" cast will perform before the concert from about 5:30 to 7 p.m. The show will be presented July 25 to 27 at The Maryland Theatre.


There will be a C-130 flyover by the 167th Airlift Wing, West Virginia Air National Guard, at 7 p.m.

Washington County Commuter will offer bus service from Public Square in downtown Hagerstown at 5 and 6 p.m. Round-trip cost is $3 for adults, free for children 5 and younger. The Commuter will drop passengers near the visitors' center at the battlefield and pick them in the same area for the return to Hagerstown following the concert and fireworks. A shuttle bus will run from the C&O Canal parking lot on Md. 34 in Sharpsburg to the battlefield. Round-trip cost is $1.

Helpful hints: Wear outdoor clothing and comfortable shoes, bring wet-weather gear, lawn chairs or blankets to sit on, a picnic dinner and a flashlight. Food and drink will be available at a concession stand provided by Sharpsburg and Mount Aetna Volunteer Fire Companies.

This year's MSO performance at Antietam will mark the beginning of Tuckwell's farewell season, which will conclude with MSO performances at The Maryland Theatre in Hagerstown March 21 and 22, 1998. For information, call 301-797-4000.
