Home detention ordered in sex offense case

July 02, 1997

A former Citicorp employee who repeatedly fondled a woman visiting that workplace last year was placed on home detention for 10 months Tuesday in Washington County Circuit Court.

Boyd Mayberry Gearhart pleaded guilty March 25 to four counts of fourth-degree sexual offenses involving the woman who worked for an outside contractor doing business at Citicorp last year.

Judge John H. McDowell originally sentenced Gearhart, 34, of 216 B Jackson St., Hancock, to four years in prison - the one-year maximum penalty for each count.

Charges of second-degree sex offense, harassment, assault and battery were dropped in exchange for the pleas in March.

When the 10-month home detention is completed, Gearhart will be on probation for two years, McDowell said Tuesday.

The incidents occurred between July and September 1996 and involved a series of assaults on the woman, according to Maryland State Police.

The woman told police Gearhart would kiss her, touch her breasts and genital area, both outside and inside her clothing, police said.

A spokesman at Citicorp said Gearhart's employment ended before he was charged with the crimes.
