Police look for boy in gun accident

June 20, 1997

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Authorities Thursday continued to search for a 15-year-old Martinsburg boy who was with a 14-year-old girl when she was shot in the leg in a home on Tabler Station Road Wednesday.

"We're pretty sure he is still in the area," said West Virginia State Police Trooper D.D. Miller.

Miller said the girl told authorities her boyfriend accidentally shot her in the knee with a 9mm handgun while the two were looking at the gun Wednesday evening.

After she was shot, the girl walked to the edge of Tabler Station Road, where she was met by rescue crews.

The shooting occurred at the home of Al Perez, about half a mile west of the Tabler Station Road exit on Interstate 81.

The Perez family was not home at the time, but police and neighbors believe children who live there allowed the runaway boy to stay there.

Miller said a 9mm handgun was found in the basement of the house.

The two youths are not being identified because they are runaways, police said. The girl remained at City Hospital Thursday, although her injuries were not life-threatening, Miller said.
