Hagerstown women vying for Miss Maryland

June 18, 1997

Three local women will compete for the Miss Maryland crown, $30,000 in cash and $1.8 million in in-kind scholarships next week: Miss Potomac Valley Amanda Hartman, Miss Western Maryland Julie Diane LaPole and Miss Washington County Toni Rickard. The three have competed in local pageants before, so they know each other.

"And we all get along," Hartman added.

The Hagerstown residents will join 21 other contestants at the Miss Maryland Scholarship Pageant Thursday, June 26, Friday, June 27, and Saturday, June 28, at The Maryland Theatre, 21 S. Potomac St. in Hagerstown. Competition begins at 8 each evening, and Miss Maryland will be selected Saturday. Tickets are $10 for Thursday, $15 for Friday and $25 for the finals Saturday. For tickets, call 301-790-2000.

Two other local pageants will have representatives at the contest. Miss Antietam Heather Metzger, of Millersville, Md., who was crowned at South Hagerstown High School, and Miss Central Valley Susan Woda, of Crofton, Md., who received her title at Ramada Inn Ballroom in Hagerstown, also will compete.
