Drivers warned away from driveways

June 17, 1997

Hagerstown drivers beware: There will be no more warnings for blocking private driveway entrances in the city.

City Council members voted 3-0 on Tuesday night to change city law so city police no longer have to warn drivers before ticketing them for blocking driveways.

The change in law takes effect on July 17.

City Engineer Bruce Johnston said some officers had interpreted the law to mean they first had to warn drivers, but a driveway entrance should be warning enough.

The change means the city no longer will post signs warning drivers not to block driveways, Johnston said. Existing signs eventually will be removed.

Councilwoman Susan Saum-Wicklein abstained from voting. She had abstained from an earlier vote on the matter because she has a private driveway entrance.
