His Beatitude, Theodosius Lazor, the Metropolitan of America and Canada, will celebrate the rare service of consecration Saturday at St. Catherine Eastern Orthodox Church in Hagerstown.
Also the archbishop of Washington, Lazor will lead the 1 p.m. service to mark the establishment of a permanent altar table that is central to the worship of more than 6 million Orthodox Christians.
The consecration of the altar table at St. Catherine's will include the actual finished construction of the table itself. Divine Liturgy will follow.
The service calls for the hammering of wooden pegs to finish the table and the placement of relics of a saint inside the table. The table then will be sealed with wax, cleaned and anointed.
