June 11, 1997

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call weekdays at 301-791-6236.

Readers are welcome to leave their recorded message on any topic they choose, but some calls are screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"To Amanda Shifler of Boonsboro. We just wanted to congratulate you and tell you how very proud we are of you for being inducted into the Hall of Fame at Children's Village on Friday, June 6, 1997 for saving your father's life. Because of your courage and bravery on Oct. 27, 1997, you saved your father's life. God blessed us with a little angel from Heaven. Love always, Mom and Dad."

"I was just reading my paper and I see where a father and his daughter were killed in an automobile accident on Pa. 522 near McConnellsburg but guess what? They were wearing their seat belts so this doesn't support the lie that the state and bleeding heart liberals keep pushing on us that seat belts save lives. I'd rather believe that maybe if these people weren't wearing seat belts, they might still be alive. Maybe Parris Glendening ought to be informed of this and maybe he wouldn't be so quick to enforce these kinds of laws where it's mandatory to wear seat belts. And these bleeding heart liberals, they're always trying to save us from ourselves."

"I hope that many of you read The Herald-Mail's Antietam Adertiser of May 27 and that fine article about the Miller House. The Miller House is in need of tour guides and it's a wonderful way to learn local history. If you are interested, we ask a minimum of four hours a month, week days and Saturday afternoons when the house is open. If you are interested and willing to serve as a tour guide please call 301-797-8782."

"I just wanted to wish my best friend Tracy a happy 29th birthday on June 12. Thank you."

"In the Boonsboro park there is a pavilion that has paint flakes hanging from the ceiling and people eat food that is cooked and prepared there during the carnival and during Boonesborough Days. They maybe eating paint in their food."

"I just wanted to tell everyone out there that if they are missing your animal, go to the SPCA and look for it. We were missing our dog for about seven days and we just thought that he'd come home. Well, we were really lucky that someone else wanted to adopt him or he might have been put to sleep. So please, go look for your animals. That's all. Thank you."

"To the person that lives on Lappans Road near the church. Maybe you could take your dog in at night because at 11:30 at night I don't need to hear your dog yapping."

"Welcome back Claudia from a most deserved vacation. Although you give your gals the kindness and consideration and you go to that extra mile to please all, we at R&R are sure glad that you enjoyed and had fun. Now we can drive you. Thanks for your caring of the kids as well as your staff. Three cheers for all the kiddos and staff at R&R which is very kind and nice. Thank you and have a nice day."

"This is for all the people calling in saying that Timothy McVeigh ought to die. Sure, maybe that's true but what about all these other people in these prisons that killed people? They deserve the same thing. If as many people were for that, then maybe these prisons wouldn't be so crowded and maybe we'd quit wasting taxpayers money if we started killing some of these people. For instance, how about that guy that killed that girl uptown here a couple of years ago? It's ridiculous. Why don't everyone get together and go after the governor and try to get him to pass laws so that we can get some of these people killed off, too?"

"Regarding McVeigh. There is no way you can justify a wrong by making another wrong. Waco was a mess and it was wrong and the government needs to correct it. Surely that. You can't say that it was right to go out and kill more people just because of Waco. You can't make correct a wrong by making another wrong. Thank you Mail Call."

"To the person about Timothy McVeigh concerning Waco and Ruby Ridge. First, those persons at Waco could have walked out of that building as others chose to do. Ruby Ridge, I only saw one commentary and I can't comment on something that I don't know too much about but I do say that if there was an injustice committed by the FBI or whomever was responsible, they deserve to be shot to death also. Don't go blaming Clinton for this. Blame it on our judicial system for the pats on the hands for crimes. And don't forget all those doctors who are performing abortions by the thousands every day. An unborn baby has no choice although it is alive and growing. If our heads are stuck where they don't belong, maybe you should check the location of your own."

"Until we get a downtown grocery store how about some street vendors? Put some Geritol and some basic soup supplies in a cart and move around."
