June 07, 1997

SMITHSBURG - A Smithsburg man was charged Friday with attempted first-degree murder and other offenses in connection with a Thursday attack with a steel rod, said Police Chief Tom Bowers.

Charles Sedgwick Lewis, 32, of 22708 Cavetown Church Road, was being held without bond at the Washington County Detention Center, Bowers said.

At 4:50 p.m. Thursday, a man with a 5-foot steel rod approached a car in the parking lot of the Washington Court apartment complex, Bowers said.

The rod hit the arm of James Thomas Boyer, 34, of Myersville, Md., who was treated at Washington County Hospital and released.

Passengers Dorothy Burke and her 5-year-old daughter Courtney Baker, who live at the apartment complex, were not hurt, Bowers said.

Witnesses said Lewis demanded money from Boyer and the woman, he said.

Charges against Lewis include attempted armed robbery, first- and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and possession with intent to distribute marijuana, he said.
