Truck parks in the Potomac

June 07, 1997

FREDERICK, Md. - Roger Asbury may never think of the Potomac River as scenic again.

Instead the Levels, W.Va., man will remember June 6 as the day his 1993 Toyota pickup truck drifted into the river at the Noland's Ferry boat parking lot and floated away.

Maryland State Police responded to the scene at 7:45 a.m. and learned that Asbury had been traveling through the area and stopped to admire the view.

Asbury told police he got out of the truck, closed the door and it began to roll backwards toward the river, struck a large tree and slid down an embankment into the water.

Attempts to recover the vehicle were put on hold because of the current treacherous conditions in the river. Strong currents swept the truck downstream until it was completely submerged, police said.

Asbury could not be reached for comment.
