Smithsburg apartment hit by fire

June 07, 1997

SMITHSBURG - A smoke detector was found to be inoperable in a fire early Friday at an apartment building at 8 S. Main St., according to Maryland fire marshals.

Fire damage was confined to the apartment occupied by John Charles Johnson, 35, according to fire marshals. There was minor smoke damage throughout the three-unit building.

The cause of the 1:29 a.m. fire is under investigation.

The smoke detector in Johnson's apartment had been disconnected from the electric power source, according to Deputy Fire Marshal Charles Cronauer.

Investigators were back out at the apartment building later Friday trying to determine the cause of the fire and if other smoke detectors in the building are disabled or working, Cronauer said.

A total of 25 firefighters from Smithsburg, Leitersburg, Mt. Aetna, Civil Defense and Waynesboro, Pa., responded to the blaze.

The owner of the building, Alice Eckstine, is insured, fire marshals said.
