LEWISTOWN, Md. - A man died in an early-morning fire on Thursday, fire officials said.
The man, who was in his mid-30s, has not been identified, said Deputy Chief State Fire Marshal Robert B. Thomas. He said officials believe he was a relative of the owners, but said the identity will not be confirmed until an autopsy is performed.
The property's owners, Kenneth and Anna Renner, were not home at the time, Thomas said.
The cause of the fire has not been determined, but Thomas said it started in a basement family room at about 4:15 a.m. in the home at 8129 Stevens Road.
A newspaper carrier discovered the fire, Thomas said. Firefighters found the one-story brick and wood frame building on fire and battled the blaze for more than an hour. Damage has been estimated at $100,000, although Thomas said the figure could rise.
