The Washington County Board of Education Tuesday night approved the hiring of a Pennsylvania firm to replace the 22-year-old roof at Smithsburg Middle School.
Strine Services Inc., of Emigsville, Pa., was the lowest bidder on the contract at $420,898, said Dennis McGee, director of facilities management.
The project will add insulation to the roof, which should cut high energy costs at the school, McGee said.
It also will include repairing damage to the school's gymnasium roof, which was previously replaced, and replacing the roof on the covered walkway between the high and middle schools, he said.
The project is being funded primarily from the school system's capital improvements budget for fiscal year 1998, McGee said.
About $8,000 will need to be shifted from the maintenance budget, he said.
The project should be completed this fall.
