Teen charged in snake theft

May 30, 1997

FREDERICK, Md. - A teenage boy was charged with theft Wednesday evening after he was found in possession of the albino California king snake, stolen from the Superpetz store in the 1200 block of West Patrick Street.

Frederick City Police said employees of the store noticed three young men in the store near the snake aquarium around 7:30 p.m. and then saw one boy put something in his pocket.

As they left the store, employees got a description of the vehicle and their tag number and called police.

When stopped, the boys denied any knowledge of the theft, police said. Later they admitted it was in a cooler in the back seat, police said.

The store manager on Thursday confirmed that the snake - a small, non-poisonous variety - was returned unharmed.
