The Washington County Board of Education expects to name an interim superintendent early next week to replace longtime Schools Superintendent Wayne F. Gersen, Board President B. Marie Byers said Thursday.

The school board has two excellent candidates for the post, said Byers, who said she hoped to be able to announce the board's choice on Tuesday.

The interim superintendent will serve until a permanent replacement for Gersen takes office, Byers said.

A Denton, Md., consulting firm has been contracted to help with the search, she said.

The consultant, Bill Ecker Enterprises, will be paid on an hourly basis with the total cost limited to $5,000, said Byers, who expects it will cost less than that.

A key role will be to check out candidates' references, she said.

The school board had hoped to name a permanent replacement by October, Byers said.

However, under Maryland law, if a permanent replacement for Gersen isn't hired by July 1, the board has to wait until July 1, 1998, for a new superintendent to start, she said.

Gersen announced April 30 that he was leaving the school system for a similar post in New York.

Gersen is scheduled to assume his duties as superintendent of schools for Wappingers Central School District in Wappingers Falls, N.Y., on July 1, but he will probably leave the county school system before June 30, Byers said.
