May 20, 1997

KEARNEYSVILLE, W.Va. - A Kearneysville man died late Monday after being struck by a car on W.Va. 9 as he walked home from a nearby convienence store, according to West Virginia State Police.

Jon Howard Baird, 58, was pronounced dead at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va., about 10:55 p.m., said Trooper S.T. Dillon.

He was walking out of the Sheetz parking lot at the intersection of W.Va. 9 and W.Va. 480 on his way to his home about a quarter of a mile away, Dillon said.

A 17-year-old Martinsburg, W.Va., girl was traveling west on W.Va. 9 and swerved into the eastbound lane in an attempt to avoid striking him, Dillon said.

Witnesses said the man had stepped right into the path of the car, Dillon said.

The accident occurred at 10:10 p.m. Monday.

No charges were filed against the driver, whose name was not released because of her age, Dillon said.
