A Falling Waters, W.Va., couple died early Sunday as the result of a single-car accident on Greencastle Pike, according to Maryland State Police.

The accident occurred at about 1:50 a.m. just south of Business Parkway, police said.

Wanda Jean Palmer, 45, was driving south on Greencastle Pike, also known as Md. 63, in a 1994 Chevrolet Camaro when she drove off the left side of the road and struck several trees, police said.

She was killed on impact, police said.

Her husband, Joseph Leroy Palmer Sr., 45, was thrown from the car, police said.

He was taken to Washington County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The accident is still under investigation, police said.

The Palmers were Hagerstown natives.

Jean Palmer worked at Pure Pizzazz and Company beauty salon on Dual Highway in Hagerstown.

Joseph Palmer worked at U.S.A. Cartage in Williamsport.

They had a daughter, Vanessa L. Hafer of Hagerstown, and a son, Joseph L. Palmer Jr. of Falling Waters, W.Va.

They had two grandchildren.

The couple will be missed at Turner's Dual Lanes in Hagerstown, where they bowled Friday nights in the Flying Feathers Bowling League, friends said.

"They were both really great people, really fun to be around," said manager Todd Smith, who remembers the Palmers coaching in the junior league program when their children were young.

They were in the Sunday Night Dart League together, and Joseph Palmer played on the Sunset Team of the Tavern Softball League.

The Palmers were very nice, happy-go-lucky people who got along well with everyone, said friend Barb Bonebrake, who graduated from North Hagerstown High School with Jean Palmer in 1970.
