May 15, 1997

A Hagerstown man has been charged with fourth-degree burglary after he was confronted by a woman in her home early Wednesday.

Matthew Evans Eyler, 33, of 561 Jefferson St., Apt. 4, was being held Wednesday at the Washington County Detention Center on $5,000 bond, according to court records.

Washington County Sheriff's Deputy Robert Whittington said Michele Helene Shelley was awakened in her 18401 Woodside Drive home by her dogs at 1:50 a.m. Wednesday.

When she came downstairs, she saw a man standing in her dining room, deputies said. The man left when Shelley confronted him.

Deputies got a detailed description of the man and his vehicle from Shelley.

Based on that, deputies located Eyler on the Sharpsburg Pike at Spielman Road a short time later.
