May 15, 1997

Sarah Dawn Kelly keeps racking up the awards.

Kelly, 17, a senior at the Career Studies Center, was named Washington County Youth of the Month for May Tuesday by the Washington County Commissioners.

Last month, she won the 1997 Youth With a Disability Award, presented by the Governor's Committee for the Employment of People with a Disability. That award came with a $2,000 scholarship.

Kelly plans to become a registered nurse, possibly in a children's hospital.

"I feel the need to help people in their everyday lives," she said.

An active member of the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), Kelly volunteered an estimated 400 hours over two years at the Williamsport Nursing Home and is working as a certified nursing assistant at Avalon Manor nursing home.

Kelly's extensive volunteer work also included 75 hours for Washington County Social Services serving homebound and handicapped residents, 33 hours with the American Red Cross, 10 hours with the American Heart Association, more than 40 hours with her church and 30 hours in the Youth Corps during last year's visit by Pope John Paul II in Baltimore.

Kelly has been an active 4-H Club member for seven years and performed internships at the Washington County Hospital.
