Allensworth making write-in bid for council

May 15, 1997

Perennial candidate Don Allensworth filed Wednesday to run as a write-in candidate for one of the five Hagerstown City Council seats open in next Tuesday's general election.

Allensworth, a Democrat, refused to talk to a reporter on the telephone.

He beat the deadline Wednesday afternoon and was the only person to file as a write-in candidate, said City Clerk Gann Breichner.

Breichner said his filing did not require a petition. A petition is required only for Independent candidates and must be filed before the primary election with the signatures of 3 percent of registered voters.

Among the offices Allensworth has run for in the past: state senate, 1990; U.S. Senate and U.S. president, 1992; Hagerstown mayor, 1993; Maryland governor, 1994; and U.S. House of Representatives, 1996.

Allensworth, 62, of 1732 Edgewood Hill Circle, is a former University of Pennsylvania professor of political science. He is the author of several books on American government. He is a graduate from Ohio State University with a master's degree.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1960 to 1968, stationed in the United States, he has said.

He held the rank of airman when he was discharged.
