YMCA wants to build new complex

May 06, 1997

The YMCA is looking for 15 to 30 acres in or around Hagerstown on which to build a $3 million to $5 million complex, YMCA Board Chairman David Beachley told the Washington County Commissioners Tuesday.

The complex could include items such as an indoor swimming pool and a child-care center, Beachley said.

The association hasn't conducted a feasibility study yet. Once the feasibility study is complete, the association would try to raise all of the money needed for the new facilities. "We really don't want to borrow money," Beachley said.

The association wants to avoid duplicating services already performed by the county parks department, he said.

One spot the YMCA has looked at is an 8- to 10-acre site at the Robinwood Medical Campus, Beachley said. Another site that has been considered is the Hagerstown Fairgrounds. Because of state regulations, the city would have to reimburse Program Open Space for any land used for the YMCA.

Beachley also asked the commissioners if there were any county properties that would be suitable for a YMCA site.

The YMCA would maintain its downtown center regardless of any expansion plans, Beachley said.
