Events on tap to mark Older Americans Month

On Saturday, May 3, Hagerstown Junior College's Center for Continuing Education joins Washington County Commission on Aging in celebrating Older Americans Month. The kickoff celebration at Valley Mall's JC Penney court will begin with a VIP ribbon cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. and will include a celebrity pizza eating contest, music by South Hagerstown High School Jazz Band, HJC Senior Adult Art Show, Show Kids of Washington County, 1997 Miss Maryland Pageant contestants and a ballroom dancing demonstration, in which the public can participate.

HJC's Valley Mall Center will have information about HJC Elderhostel, Institute for Learning in Retirement, Summer Continuing Education classes and New Horizons Band for seniors.

Also on Saturday, May 3, from 8 to 11 p.m., the commission will present "Some Enchanted Evening" dance open to adults at Elks Club on Robinwood Drive in Hagerstown. Ray Birely Orchestra will present sounds of the big bands. Doors open at 7 p.m., and Susan Alexander, Miss Maryland 1996, will greet early arrivers. Williamsport High School Sophisti`Cats' will perform.

Advance tickets are $5 each and are available at Commission on Aging, Alexander House on the Public Square in Hagerstown and by calling 301-790-0275, 301-739-4018 and 301-790-2660. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door for $5 each.
