A city man wanted on a forgery charge was charged with assaulting a police officer on Thursday after the two ended up wrestling on a bank floor, Hagerstown City Police said.

Randall M. Long, 34, of 631 W. Franklin St., Apartment 1, was arrested at Municipal Stadium after police chased him from Farmers & Merchants Bank and Trust at 201 S. Cleveland Ave. around 12:30 p.m., said Patrolman Steve Cromer.

Cromer alleged that Long resisted when he tried to place him under arrest.

Cromer said he had Long in a headlock from behind when they fell to the floor, wrestling, as Cromer yelled for tellers to call 911 for backup.

When Long started to get to his feet, Cromer said he pushed him into a corner and used pepper spray, but Long ran from the bank with Cromer in pursuit.

Long was caught by Patrolman Joseph Stauffer at 12:30 p.m. at the stadium, Cromer said.

Cromer said Long was wanted in connection with a $740 check drawn in April against another man's account.

Long was charged with resisting arrest, forgery of a private document, theft of more than $300, uttering a false document and possession of drug paraphernalia - a marijuana pipe, Cromer said.

He was being held on bonds totaling $40,000 on Thursday night at the Washington County Detention Center, police said.
