Teen charged in accident

WILLIAMSPORT - A Williamsport teen was charged with failure to drive right of center following a three-vehicle accident on Bakersville Road Friday evening, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

The accident occurred at about 8:45 p.m. just east of Shaffer Road, police said.

Charles E. Wells, 16, of Dorsey Road, Williamsport, was eastbound in a 1993 Chevrolet Corsica when he crested a hill at a high rate of speed, crossed the center lane and side-swiped two oncoming vehicles, police said.

Wells first struck a westbound 1986 Chevrolet Blazer, driven by Janine K. Schaeffer, 41, of Shaffer Road, Sharpsburg, police said.

He then struck a 1971 GMC pickup truck, driven by Warren McClung Jr., 33, of Lee Street, Hagerstown, police said.

No injuries were reported, police said.

Fire destroys barn

WALKERSVILLE - A fire destroyed a barn in the Dearbought subdivision off Md. 26 Sunday afternoon, officials said.

The blaze, which began at about 5:30 p.m., also damaged a plow that was inside. But Scott Campbell, first assistant fire chief of the Walkersville Volunteer Fire Co., said farmer Jay Inskeep was fortunate that there was not that much equipment inside the barn.

Campbell estimated damage at $30,000.

By the time firefighters arrived, Campbell said the fire was already raging. He said firefighters concentrated on making sure it did not spread to nearby homes and other buildings.

Campbell said the weather also helped.

"The other blessing was it was a very wet day," he said. "It was Mother Nature's assist."

The state fire marshal's office is investigating the cause of the blaze, Campbell said.
