Man charged with molesting child

A 55-year-old Clear Spring man has been accused of sexually molesting his step-granddaughter on several occasions beginning last September, according to Maryland State Police.

The man, whose name is being withheld to protect the identity of the 6-year-old victim, is charged with child abuse, sexual offenses in the 2nd and 3rd degree, and assault, according to Trooper First Class Michael Potter.

He was released on bond.

According to Potter, the incidents occurred when the girl's grandmother left for work, leaving the victim and her younger brother in the defendant's care.

The victim told her mother about the incidents on Feb. 14, Potter said, because she wanted it to stop.

The victim told Potter the defendant touched and penetrated her genital area on several occasions and also had her touch him in the genital area.

There were also allegations of oral sex and the accused getting on top of the little girl but no claims of intercourse, Potter said.

Police suspend search for inmate

Maryland State Police suspended active search for a prison inmate who escaped from a work detail Tuesday morning, officials said.

Edwin Phillip Hobbs, 35, a prisoner at the Maryland Correctional Training Center south of Hagerstown, was part of a five-man crew working along state roads. He bolted at about 11:10 a.m. when the group took a break at the Md. 66 park-and-ride area just north of Interstate 70, police said.

All road police were keeping an eye out for Hobbs on Wednesday, but all other organized searches have been suspended, police said.

The day before, about eight troopers, two bloodhounds and a Maryland State Police helicopter searched the area but could not find Hobbs.
