Fire destroys W.Va. house

KEARNEYSVILLE, W.Va. - Fire destroyed a single-story home in the Fox Glen subdivision off W.Va. 9 Friday afternoon, according to fire officials.

Firefighters were hampered in their efforts by gusting winds up to about 35 mph, said Leon Catrow, assistant chief of the Shepherdstown Fire Department.

The design of the home also made it difficult to extinguish the fire, Catrow said.

The house was built around a mobile home, and it was difficult to get inside the trailer to put out the fire, Catrow said.

Doris and Norval Gillum lived in the house, said Ginger Gillum, the couple's daughter-in-law.

Norval Gillum came home and discovered the fire in the garage, said Ginger Gillum.

Catrow said it is unclear what started the fire, which was reported about 4:45 p.m.

The Gillums had just remodeled the interior of the home and were starting to work on the exterior, said Ginger Gillum.

About 25 firefighters responded to the fire.

Fox Glen is located east of the intersection of W.Va. 9 and W.Va. 480 in Kearneysville.
