The two hot times for teen alcohol abuse are prom season and beach week, according to Tom Mentor, addictions counselor at Washington County Health Department.

In a 1994 Maryland Adolescent Survey of Washington County 12th-graders, 70.9 percent said they had used some form of alcohol during the past year.

Twenty-three percent of those students reported that they had ridden with a driver who was under the influence of alcohol once or twice in the past year, and 11.8 percent said that they had driven under the influence of alcohol.

Sandy Graff, a health resource teacher with Washington County schools, says the information in the anonymous survey is self-reported, relying on unverified information provided by students.
