A preliminary decision by Washington County Commissioners to add 12 deputies at the Washington County Detention Center - 10 fewer than Sheriff Charles Mades requested, isn't sitting well with Mades.
"It's going to have a severe impact," Mades said. "I just hope nothing serious happens."
Mades said he did understand County Commissioners faced tight budget constraints. "I guess I'm being selfish when I think that safety should be the number one priority of the funding authority."
Mades had asked commissioners for the extra officers to cope with a surging inmate population and to bring the inmate-to-officer ratio in line with other county jails of similar size in the state.
