Ted's Rent-It Center is expected to move into a bigger building late this summer, said owner Ted Shank.

The equipment rental business is moving to Virginia Avenue, Shank said.

Shank said that about 18 months ago, he had placed a sign on Eastern Boulevard indicating the company would relocate there, but changed his mind when the former Bow Lighting & Supply Inc. building at 17827 Virginia Ave. became available.

Construction has begun on an addition to the Bow building that will provide more display room, Shank said.

The company rents equipment for lawn and garden, light construction, party, audiovisual and concession needs. Shank said he employs nine people and will add an employee next month.

The business currently is located in a two-story building at 519 N. Locust St., and in two nearby warehouses, he said.

The new location should solve the company's parking problems. There will be at least 40 parking spaces compared with three at the current location, Shank said.

The rental center opened on North Locust Street around 1969 and moved to 519 N. Locust St. in 1974, Shank said. Shank bought the business from local developer Richard McCleary in 1979.

Bow Lighting moved out of the Virginia Avenue building last year. Before that, the building was an Acme grocery store, he said.

When the rental center opens on Virginia Avenue, the business might operate out of both locations for a while, Shank said.

Eventually, the buildings on North Locust Street will be sold or leased, he said.
