March 28, 1997

The students who attended Thursday's graduation ceremony at the Roxbury Correctional Institution got more than their diplomas.

Guest speaker Thomas Perry delivered a motivational speech entitled, "Reinventing Who You Are," to the captive audience.

An attorney from Connecticut, Perry travels around the country speaking to the incarcerated, encouraging them to change their lives so they never again find themselves behind bars.

A total of 57 inmates received certificates indicating they completed vocational work programs in a variety of skills, officials said.

Robert Mahoney, Bronwood Smith and Jack Shaffer were singled out as high achievers in those programs.

Thirty students successfully completed the academic day school at RCI.

Michael Campbell, Paul Johnson and Robert Nuckles were honored for high achievement as honor students in the academic program.

Eight students completed the academic night school.

Steven Collins, Matthew Flynn, Donald Hopkins, Eric Jackson and John Martyn were named honor students in the evening program.
