Man pleads guilty in sex assault case

March 26, 1997

A former Citicorp employee pleaded guilty Tuesday to four counts of fourth-degree sexual offenses involving alleged sexual assaults on a woman who worked for an outside contractor at that workplace last year.

Boyd Mayberry Gearhart, 33, of 216 B Jackson St., Hancock, was freed pending sentencing and a presentence investigation ordered by Washington County Circuit Judge John H. McDowell.

Charges of second-degree sex offense, harassment, assault and battery were dropped in exchange for the pleas.

The incidents occurred between July and September 1996 and involved a series of assaults on the woman, according to Maryland State Police reports.

The woman told police Gearhart would kiss her, touch her breasts and genital area, both outside and inside her clothing, police said.

A spokesman at Citicorp said Gearhart's employment ended before he was charged with the crimes.

The maximum penalty for a fourth-degree sexual offense is one year in jail.
