Suns go to bat for former outfielder

March 25, 1997

The Hagerstown Suns baseball team, with the help of the Suns Fan Club, is launching a fund-raising drive for the Anthony Sanders Jr. Trust Fund.

The Toronto Blue Jays began the trust fund after Denise Sanders, the wife of former Suns' outfielder Anthony Sanders, and the mother of Anthony Sanders Jr., died in a skiing accident.

The Suns and the fan club will sell tickets to the Suns' May 16 game against the Charleston Alley Cats. The tickets will be sold at Municipal Stadium prior to that date. The price of the tickets will be $5, with $4 of that going directly into the trust fund.

"Anthony and Anthony Jr. are obviously going through a very difficult time in their lives," said Suns General Manager David Blenckstone. "Our staff thought that a fund-raiser in addition to the ballclub's donation, for little Anthony's trust fund would be appropriate."

In addition to selling the tickets for the Alley Cats' game, the team's fan club will raffle off several items at different times during Suns' home games, with proceeds going to the trust fund.

The Suns open the 1997 season on April 3 in Georgia against the Macon Braves. The team's home opener is Tuesday, April 15, against the Capital City Bombers.
