RCI inmate wounded in stabbing

March 20, 1997

A stabbing following lunch Wednesday in the Roxbury Correctional Institution mess hall has left one prisoner hospitalized and two other inmates segregated for their alleged participation in the attack.

The victim, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, is "expected to survive," according to Maxine Eldridge, spokesman for the Maryland Division of Correction.

Eldridge said he was stabbed once in the neck.

He was taken to Washington County Hospital shortly after the 10:30 a.m. incident, Eldridge said. No condition was available at the hospital without a name.

The tier housing the two suspects in Housing Unit 4 was locked down for an extensive search following the incident.

"No weapon has been recovered yet," Eldridge said late Wednesday.
