W.Va. police pursuit ends in wreck

March 15, 1997

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Martinsburg man was charged with auto theft after a chase Friday night that ended when the car he was driving wrecked at the intersection of U.S. 11 and Berkeley Station Road, police said.

Deputy Robert Bussard saw the man near Berkeley Plaza about 8 p.m. driving a car police believe had been stolen, Berkeley County Sheriff's Department Sgt. K.C. Bohrer said.

West Virginia State Police had received a report earlier in the day that the 1989 Ford Mustang had been stolen from Stingray Motors on Warm Springs Avenue, Bohrer said.

When Bussard tried to stop the driver, he fled. Bussard pursued until the driver lost control on the wet road, Bohrer said. There were no injuries.

Bohrer said he did not know how fast the two cars were going.

Shawn D. Dailey, 19, of Redyns Drive, was charged with grand larceny auto, reckless driving, fleeing and eluding a police officer and driving on a suspended license, Bohrer said.
