Washington County Fire and Rescue Coordinator Roger "Jerry" Reed has resigned effective May 15, County Administrator Rodney M. Shoop said Tuesday.

"I've done what I can do," Reed said. "I would like to expand my horizons, do some teaching."

Reed is the liaison between the County Commissioners and the Washington County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association.

Reed said he, the commissioners, Shoop and Human Resources Director Alan Davis sat down and talked about the resignation and agreed on a date.

Reed said it was "a very amicable separation ... It's time for me to go."

The resignation comes nearly a year after Reed cleaned out his office and said that he was going to be offered the choice of being fired or resigning and he was choosing to be fired.

But Reed returned to his job after two weeks of unpaid administrative leave.

Officials said he had been suspended for failing to get a county permit to put in electrical outlets at his home and because of a verbal dispute after a fire and rescue meeting. The county last May put Reed on one year's probation after the administrative leave.

Reed began working in the newly created position on April 18, 1994. He makes a little more than $30,000 a year, he said.
