An assault by an inmate sent a Washington County Detention Center officer to the hospital Sunday afternoon, Sheriff Charles F. Mades said.

Deputy 1st Class Tony V. Davis, who has worked at the facility since 1984, was taken to Washington County Hospital after the 3 p.m. assault, Mades said.

Late Sunday, a hospital official said Davis was still being evaluated in the emergency room.

Mades said Sunday night he did not have full details of the assault. He said more information - such as whether charges would be filed - would be available this morning.

"I can confirm that an officer was assaulted by an inmate," he said.

The officer's brother, Ed Davis, said his brother was hit in the face and pushed to the ground.

"He's got a lot of pain in his back, and his eye that got hit is quite swollen," he said.

Ed Davis said he hoped the assault would spur more public support for detention center employees and corrections officers throughout the state.

He said his brother and colleagues deserve better staffing, even if budgets are tight.

"When people are getting hurt, it's kind of hard to see the money issue," he said.
