No. 1 Trojans turn back Hawks

February 22, 1997

CUMBERLAND, Md. - This time, Hagerstown Junior College was forced to save its upset magic until next time.

Allegany College defended its No. 1 ranking in junior college with a dominating 42-17 run in the middle of the game to turn back the Hawks Saturday with a 100-79 victory before an overflow crowd at Trojan Square Garden.

The Trojans (29-1) won their 27th straight game while clinching the Maryland JuCo Conference regular-season title with the victory. Allegany and HJC could meet one last time next weekend in the Region XX finals.

HJC (22-8) jumped out to an early 24-16 lead on the strength of defense and 3-point shooting. But with Devon Wade and Chris Jones, the Hawks' only two legitimate inside players, in foul trouble, the complexion of the game changed.

Allegany caught the Hawks and took a 25-24 lead and pulled away. With HJC's middle softened, Quincy Gause and Recus Nix took over.

The Trojans outscored HJC 18-8 to open the second half, despite seven straight points by Wade, who finished with a game-high 25. But Allegany got the first 11 rebounds of the second half to keep control of the middle.

Allegany led by as much as 70-50 before HJC made its comeback try.

Gause finished with 20 and Nix added 19 for Allegany. Ryan Saunders had 19 for HJC.
