WILLIAMSPORT - Defense was the name of the game Tuesday night as Williamsport shut down Catoctin, 44-20, in a Monocacy Valley Athletic League girls' basketball game.

"We certainly needed a big victory," said Williamsport coach Curtis Graff, whose team snapped a two-game losing streak. "Our kids played nice on defense, especially Erin Gross and Melissa Barrett. If you limit a team to eight points at halftime, then your defense has done an excellent job."

Williamsport's defense held Catoctin to just four points in each quarter, except the third. In that quarter, the Cougars managed eight points.

Carrie Weimer led the Wildcats (12-7, 8-7) with 12 points, 11 rebounds and three steals. Jessica Rouse had 10 rebounds, Janet Richmond added six rebounds and four assists, and Krista Whittington had five rebounds.

Lindsey Benjamin led Catoctin (4-12, 2-10) with eight points and four assists. Shannon Cool had seven rebounds, while Jamie Shriner had three blocked shots and three steals.

"They just outhustled us tonight," Catoctin coach Steve Cree said. "We made a lot of mental mistakes. We were in the game until they got that hot spell in the second quarter. Williamsport ran a solid game tonight. They didn't make a lot of mistakes and they capitalized on ours. That is how you win ball games."

After Catoctin made the opening basket of the game, the Wildcats outscored the Cougars 11-2 over the remainder of the first quarter to build a seven-point lead.

Catoctin struck first in the second quarter as well, but Williamsport responded by scoring 11 straight points to increase its advantage to 22-6. During that 11-0 streak by the Wildcats, Weimer made a pair of baskets and Gross canned a 3-pointer. Weimer scored a total of six points in the period to help Williamsport take a 25-8 advantage at halftime.

"We did a better job of shooting the ball tonight," Graff added. "Our shooters weren't afraid to take the open shots."
