Head-on crash kills Mt. Airy man

February 02, 1997

FREDERICK, Md. - A head-on car crash early Saturday morning left one man dead and another seriously injured, and police said they are still investigating what exactly happened.

Russell Paul Windsor, 21, of Mt. Airy, Md., was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical examiner, according to a Frederick County Sheriff's Office report.

The accident took place at about 2 a.m. in the eastern part of the county, near the intersection of Md. 144 and Jesse Smith Road.

Officials say Windsor was driving westbound on Md. 144 in his 1989 Nissan 240SX when he crossed the center line and struck a 1986 Ford Aerostar van driven by Steven Russell Shoffstall, 42, of Mt. Airy.

Rescue crews from New Market and Mt. Airy worked for 20 minutes to free Shoffstall from his vehicle before he was transported by state police helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. A hospital spokeswoman said Shoffstall was listed in serious condition.

Accident reconstructionists worked at the scene Saturday to determine the cause of the accident. The investigation is continuing.
