February 01, 1997

LARGO, Md. - Heather Aleshire became the first woman to score 1,000 career points at Hagerstown Junior College, scoring 31 Friday night to lead the Hawks to a 76-64 victory over Prince George's Community College.

Aleshire, the Tri-State area's high school girls' career scoring leader, also broke the HJC women's career scoring record of 983 points set by Kathy Orsini, who played for the Hawks from 1981-83.

The Hawks trailed 48-40 with 11:30 remaining when Aleshire and Marisa Hardy sparked an 18-0 run that spanned less than four minutes. The streak - which featured four 3-pointers by Aleshire - gave the Hawks a 10-point lead with eight minutes to play.

Hardy scored a career-high 18 points and was perfect in the second half, hitting all five of her shots from the floor and a pair of free throws. She also had six rebounds, three steals and blocked a shot.
