Two hurt when county truck flips

January 29, 1997

Two employees of the Washington County Roads Department were injured in an accident Tuesday morning when their dump truck flipped over while they were salting slick spots on Ritchie Road.

Dale Russell "Rusty" Bowser, 42, and Robert Allan Benner, 44, both of Smithsburg, were taken to Washington County Hospital shortly after the 9:24 a.m. accident.

The men, both of whom were wearing seatbelts, were treated and released from the hospital, a spokesman said.

Washington County Sheriff's Deputy Brian Smith said the truck, which was loaded with eight tons of sand, ran off the edge of the roadway and flipped over when it returned to the road.

Smith said he was under the impression the truck was repairable.

"I was told this same truck had flipped over more than once before and was repaired," Smith said.

The load of sand, which spilled from the truck, was recoverable, Smith said.

No other vehicles were involved.

Calls to Ted Wolford, superintendent of the Washington County Transportation Department, weren't returned.
