The Stuarts/Stuarts Plus women's clothing store at Valley Park Commons on Wesel Boulevard in Hagerstown will close by the end of March, store manager Lisa Truax said Monday.

Stuarts has been open for about four years, Truax said.

"Merchandise was placed on sale last Friday," she said. "We will be here through March."

Truax said store personnel were notified of the closing last week.

The store's six employees will lose their jobs, she said. Truax said she was offered a job at one of the metropolitan-area stores, but decided against the transfer.

The Stuarts store here is one of 96 women's apparel stores in 21 states being closed by Petrie Retail Inc., a privately held retailer operating in bankruptcy.

Petrie owns 526 stores. Some of the other stores being closed operate under the names Petrie's, Jean Nicole, Marianne, "resource" and Three Sisters.

Gordon Brothers Partners, a Boston-based retail advisory firm, has been appointed by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court to manage the sales at the stores that are closing.
