Hagerstown City Police have had an officer working on overtime patrol a West End neighborhood about once a week for five weeks to address neighbors' concerns about noise, vandalism and harassment by loitering youths, said Capt. Robert Voytko.
The officer will continue occasional visits for a few more weeks, while police work on a more permanent solution to the problem, Voytko said.
The problem has included underage drinking, Voytko said. Police are contacting landlords when renters are involved, he said.
The officers that routinely patrol the neighborhood around George and Winter streets will work with the youths and neighbors on a regular basis to solve the problems, he said.
In late November, the neighborhood requested three full-time officers for the area in a petition signed by 156 neighborhood residents.
